Turaida Museum Reserve invites you to participate in the Day of Livs on Sunday, August 28 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
During the feast Liv language will be spoken and performed Liv songs, offered possibility to participate in interactive tour The Heirs of Satesele about cultural heritage of Vidzeme Livs and taste flatfish from Courland and other traditional food. Thanks to Sigulda Regional Council, the festive atmosphere will be created by Live Song Ensemble Laula from Kolka
Over the years Turaida Museum Reserve has established tradition to dedicate the last Sunday of August to cultural history of Livs, especially, Vidzeme Livs. Also this year, on August 28, Turaida will assemble popularizers of the Liv cultural heritage to inform local community about cultural values of the other indigenous people of Latvia. During the feast an exhibition The Heirs of Satesele will be viewable; Rasma Noriņa, the keeper of collection from Limbaži Museum will lecture on Metsepole Livs and their Posterity; Ligita Beitiņa, the chief specialist of Turaida Museum Reserve, will guide a special tour with a task in the exhibition The Gauja Livs in the Cultural History of Latvia in which everybody is welcome to demonstrate his/her quick wit and knowledge about ancient history. Dāvis Stalts, the chairman of the board of Liv Association, will inform about current topicalities of the Liv people. Songs in Liv language will be performed by Liv Song Ensemble Laula from Kolka. The name Laula in translation from Liv language means song. The ensemble under guidance of Dzintra Tauniņa has been perfoming more than 11 years. It has enriched numerous feasts and events in Kurzeme and Riga, as well as participated in the Folklore Festival in Slovakia.
Information about heritage of Vidzeme Livs will be available in the museum`s permanent exhibitions and especially in the exhibition, prepared for this day, The Heirs of Satesele. Materials for this exhibition were used from the collection of Turaida Museum Reserve and Latvia State Historical Archives. The exhibition provides information about Satesele Livs and their posterity, who were mentioned in the Register Books of Sigulda Region and in the Church Register Books. One of exhibition`s aims is to reveal the unknown history of the former Satesele Liv District, to arouse the interest of Sigulda inhabitants about the past and to become conscious of themselves as Cultural Heirs of Sigulda Region. The exhibition will provide insight into the history of peasant and carftsmen families in Sigulda Region and will serve as inspiration for inhabitants to make their own family trees.
